The violin's four strings are tuned in fifths: G3, D4, A4 and E5, from the lowest to the highest. Orchestras tune to the A string first, usually at 440 Hz, and then tune the others from it.
Use the fine tuners on the tailpiece for small corrections and the pegs only when a string is far off. Turn pegs slowly and push them gently into the pegbox as you turn, so they hold. Tune up to the note rather than down for a string that stays put.
Bowing gives a steadier tone for the tuner than plucking. Practising a piece? Check its key with the key finder or slow it down without changing the pitch in the pitch and tempo changer.
