iPhone voice memos and many downloads are saved as M4A (AAC), which some apps, cars and websites won’t accept. Convert them to MP3 in a few seconds.

M4A is the audio-only flavor of MP4. Apple uses it everywhere: iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports, iTunes downloads and many podcast recorders save M4A, usually with AAC compression and sometimes with lossless ALAC.
AAC sounds great, but plenty of software still expects MP3: older car stereos and MP3 players, some podcast hosts, school and job portals, and a lot of audio plugins for websites. Converting to MP3 is the quickest fix when an upload is rejected or a file won’t play.
Going from AAC to MP3 is a lossy-to-lossy conversion, so choose 192 kbps or higher for music to avoid adding audible artifacts; 128 kbps is fine for voice memos and interviews. Songs protected by Apple Music’s DRM can’t be converted, but your own recordings and DRM-free purchases can.
To get a voice memo off your iPhone, open it in Voice Memos, tap Share and choose Save to Files, then pick it here. Long recordings can be shortened afterwards with the audio cutter.
