Opus is a modern, efficient audio codec built for voice and streaming. WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages, Discord and many web-call recordings use it, usually saved as .opus or .ogg files.
Opus sounds great at small sizes, but older players, car stereos, some editors and transcription tools don't support it. MP3 plays everywhere. For voice notes, 128 kbps is plenty.
To save a WhatsApp voice note, use Share or Export chat (with media) and pick the .opus file here. If Safari can't read the file, try Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
