M4A is Apple's audio format, usually AAC inside an MP4 container. It is small and sounds good, but many tools still ask for WAV: transcription and dictation services, older audio editors, samplers, video-editing timelines and lab or call-center software.
Converting to WAV makes the audio uncompressed, so it opens everywhere and can be edited without another round of compression. It won't add detail that AAC removed, but it won't lose any more either.
On an iPhone, open Voice Memos, tap Share › Save to Files, then pick the file here. For smaller files that still play everywhere, use M4A to MP3 instead.
