Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container). It keeps the same quality as JPG in about half the space, but Windows apps, many websites, online forms and older Android phones still can't open it.
Converting to JPG makes a photo open everywhere. PNG is lossless and larger, useful for editing or screenshots. Your photos are decoded on your own device, so private pictures never reach a server.
To stop new photos being saved as HEIC, open Settings › Camera › Formats on the iPhone and choose "Most Compatible".
