To find the key, the tool measures how much energy each of the 12 notes has across the song and compares that profile with the typical shape of every major and minor key. The closest match is the key; its relative key shares the same notes, which is why songs are sometimes listed under either.
For the tempo it detects where notes and drum hits start, then looks for the most regular spacing between them. Results can come out at half or double the "real" tempo (85 vs 170 BPM), so both are shown.
Songs that change key, use free tempo or have no drums give a best guess. Check it by tapping along with the tap tempo tool or by playing the key's notes on the virtual piano.
