The tool follows the energy of the song and marks every moment where it jumps, which is where notes and drum hits start. It then looks for the most regular spacing in those marks and favours tempos that are common in pop, dance and hip-hop, between about 70 and 180 BPM.
Results can come out at half or double the tempo you feel, for example 85 and 170 BPM. Both values are shown, so you can pick the one that matches the song when you tap along.
Free tempo, rubato and songs without a steady beat give a best guess. To count the tempo yourself, tap along with the circle above and compare the two. For the musical key, use the key finder.
